Are louvre doors old fashioned?

Upon mentioning the term louvre door, we couldn’t blame you for imagining the retro louvre door look that is so reminiscent of the 70s and 80s.  The nuances and details found on modern louvre doors have greatly evolved over time and are used in contemporary interiors now more than ever. Their ability to offer versatility, as well as beautify spaces, has seen them become a staple among interior designers meaning they are here for the duration.

So, are louvre doors old fashioned? Absolutely not! In fact, it is fair to say that louvre doors are one of the most popular internal doors used in homes today. Here are our reasons why you should think about incorporating them into your 21st century home…

What are the advantages of louvre doors?

Flexible door opening options

Whether you prefer traditional left and right opening (hinged) doors or a track option, we can deliver. Bi-fold and by-pass louvre doors are extremely popular choices with our customers, and we can even motorise them if you are looking for an uber-modern option. However, if you are a fan of their retro appeal, a swing door opening may be more your style.

Made bespoke for you

All our shuttered doors are bespoke, which means we can accommodate any style, shape, or size requested. Our tailor-made approach means we can make louvre doors to fit an opening precisely. Plus, if your doors are for a wardrobe, we can match the doors to the exact carcass of your wardrobe. We understand that modern furniture and storage solutions are no longer made with a one-sized-fits-all approach (a trip to Ikea will soon remind you of that!). So, if you have an unusual sized door or storage set up, we can ensure our doors match your carcass.

Versatile louvre sizes and shutter styles

Louvre size can completely change the look of shutters. This is why we offer a choice of five louvre sizes for all shutter doors.

Customers who want to create a more traditional style often opt for smaller size slats on interior doors, while those with more modern tastes tend to choose large slats for a minimalist look and optimum light flow. Louvre wardrobe doors, however, may require a smaller slat size to provide coverage for the wardrobe’s contents. Louvres on doors can either be fixed in a position of your choice or left operational to allow users to manually change the position as required.

When it comes to shutter style, it is completely up to you. You can choose from full height louvre doors, solid doors, or a mixture of both. You may decide that the bottom tier should be solid and the top tier louvred (or visa versa).

Shutter colour is not an issue either; our shutter colour palette consists of 28 colours and 20 stains. Plus, if you still can’t find exactly what you need, we can create and match custom colours from a variety of paint brands including Dulux, RAL, Farrow & Ball, Fired Earth, Paint & Paper Library and Little Greene. We can even match using any sample you supply. Matching your décor is never an issue for our shuttered doors.

Ventilation

A notable feature of louvre doors is that the angled slats allow for ventilation and air flow, which is particularly beneficial when they are used for wardrobes. Clothes are prevented from smelling musty and damp, so these doors are a smart choice for spare room wardrobes where you might not be accessing the contents every day.

Likewise, louvre doors work well in multi-purpose spaces such as open plan kitchen/diners, where you are trying to create zones within the space but want to keep air and light flowing freely through the entire area.

Quality material

Not only is wood nature’s most versatile building material, but it is also an excellent insulator. Its natural beauty is aesthetically pleasing due to the warmth it exudes and the ambience it creates, making wood the perfect, timeless choice for the shuttered doors and windows in your home.

We can create louvred doors using any of our shutter ranges, but some ranges are better suited to some uses than others. For example, whilst wardrobe doors can be crafted using MDF, their weight would mean the doors would need to have a traditional left and right opening. However, if you wanted your doors running on a track, we would recommend our Fiji range which is natural hardwood and the lightest material in our range. It moves more easily as there is less weight bearing down on the track and is ideal for large expanses such as bi-fold and by-pass doors.

The quality wood used for our shutters means they are completely suited to the demands of modern home life. In fact, we are so confident in their durability, we offer a 5-year warranty on all our shutters.

Don’t forget, wood is also a sustainable material. Our wooden shutters are manufactured by one of the biggest manufacturers in the world who are committed to reducing their carbon footprint where possible, and who cultivate their own trees to help protect existing forests.

Minimal cleaning

Modern life can be hectic, and cleaning is the last thing we want to spend our precious free time on. As a natural material, wooden shutters do not require expensive maintenance or elaborate cleaning. You can just wipe the louvres and frames with a damp cloth, making them much more hygienic and easier to clean than dust-collecting curtains.

Add value with timeless style

Installing wooden shutters is one of the few upgrades you can make which will continue to add value to your home. As a favoured material that has been used in homes for centuries, it is unlikely to ever go out of fashion. Plus, as they are custom made, interior shutter doors and windows will remain in your property even after you leave – what house buyer wouldn’t see the benefits in that?

Our large choice of styles, colours and materials means our shuttered doors complement any interior décor, style, or requirement.

If you want to give your living space a makeover this winter, louvre doors could be the answer. Plus, at a time when living costs are weighing heavily on all our minds, we understand the need for flexibility, which is why we have introduced 5-year finance availability on all of our products.
