Bespoke Shutters in Beckton
The East London suburb we now know as Beckton was once sparse, unpopulated marshland beside the River Thames. However, the area was increasingly developed in the 19th century — with Beckton Gas Works and Beckton Sewage Treatment Works both cropping up.
Construction on the sewage treatment works commenced in 1864 at the behest of civil engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette, who was determined to create a sewerage system that would help bring an end to the series of frequent cholera outbreaks in the city.
Beckton Gasworks — built to manufacture coal-derived products including coal gas and coke — operated from 1870 to 1970 and was at one point hailed as Europe’s largest gas works. The site also featured in films, including the 1981 James Bond adventure For Your Eyes Only.
